Terry's Thoughts June 2021
Can you believe it, we are halfway through 2021! The pace of life seems to be picking up steam (especially since the covid restrictions are being lifted) as we begin opening our services and facilities, scheduling events –– including revivals –– and welcoming new family members to, at least, two of our pastors’ homes (Abraham to Matt and Melissa Dupuy of Galatia and Hazel Kate to Kevin and Chelsea Campbell of Union Baptist). I believe I can speak for all of us when I say these realities are certainly welcomed. Several of the events mentioned above, within our association, are occurring this month and most of them are noted within this newsletter. I urge you to consider participating with your brothers and sisters to restore lost fellowship and lost opportunities to be the church where He has placed us to serve.
As we think about reopening and adjusting to the new realities before us, the task of evangelism and disciple making has NOT changed and we have one of the greatest opportunities I have seen in many years to reach our communities for Christ. To that end, our new Baptist State Convention of North Carolina (BSCNC) Executive Director Treasurer (EDT) is challenging us to baptize as many as possible on or about Sunday September 12. The campaign is titled “FILL THE TANK.” In short, he, along with the staff of the BSCNC, are encouraging every church in North Carolina to fill their baptistries, that day, in hopes of baptizing new converts to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Frankly, I cannot think of a more proper campaign to concern ourselves with than reaching the lost. The numbers of churches who have reported no baptisms over the last few years is shocking and it is time to begin reversing that trend. The details concerning this campaign are on the BSCNC website at https://fillthetanknc.org/. At this site you will find an explanation of the campaign, registration cards, and resources to help prepare as well as promote this important effort. I have taken the liberty of ordering 60 registration and commitment cards to give to our pastors. I will be challenging our pastors to commit themselves and you to this effort. Even if each church would baptize only one person that would be 60 new converts to the gospel. The Bible tells us that at the salvation of even one soul all of heaven celebrates. Let us join our brothers and sisters, throughout the state, to show the world the life-giving salvation that is found only in Jesus Christ. Making disciples, along with sharing the gospel, is precisely what our disfunctional world needs just now. The only way unity can be reestablished is when the church begins, once again, to be the church for a lost and dying world.
One final note for this article is to remind you guys of our upcoming national convention coming up on June 15 and 16. This year’s convention is shaping up to be an eventful time together and I am praying God would truly show up and move as never before among us. There are a lot of difficult issues facing our convention; however, none of them are enough to keep us from our most important task of reaching the world for Christ. My prayer is that we will come together as brothers and sisters in Christ to uphold our articles of faith, to love one another as Jesus would while dealing with difficult issues, and restore fellowship the enemy has attempted to destroy. Our world is in utter chaos and the church is the last line of defense against a culture that would rather the church disappear. Friends, I have news for the enemy, “YOU HAVE BEEN DEFEATED AT THE CROSS OF JESUS AND THE RESTORED CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD IS STANDING UP AGAINST YOU! JUST AS YOU HAVE BEEN DEFEATED BY OUR LORD, YOUR EFFORTS NOW CANNOT OVERCOME THE ONES WHO HAVE OVERCOME THROUGH THE SHED BLOOD OF JESUS!” Let us, West Chowan, be people of the book, faithful to that book, and faithful to share the gospel of that book – THE BIBLE! Remember I love you and consider it an honor to serve.
